There’s quite a bit of buzz brewing about a new website that allows you to “own a piece” of the Internet. It is called Agloco that allows individual users to participate in the revenues.

I didn’t pay much attention to it the first time someone mentioned it to me. However, I’ve been hearing more and more people jump on board. Like Facebook, if I hear it enough times, it’s probably worth checking out.

Overview

AGLOCO is the first Internet based economic network, which enables you as a member to actively participate in a share of the Internet Advertisers that are spending billions just to reach to you. It is the vision of AGLOCO to see that you get a fair share of the revenue made. At first glance, this doesn’t sound that unique since Gravee (also in beta mode) offers a similar value proposition.

Quick Facts

Membership is free for members anywhere in the world.

AGLOCO pays you to surf the web by having the Viewbar open.

For every 5 members you refer to AGLOCO who then sign up, doubles your income earning potential.

100% of the company is member-owned.

Members will get shares of the company which can be traded once AGLOCO goes public.

Cheques are sent via mail, monthly.

AGLOCO is a made-up term which stands for “A Global Community”. Yet it already gives 2,710,000+ results on Google, just after 4 months of it’s debut.

History

AGLOCO is the reincarnation of AllAdvantage, the company that started the “get paid to..” fad. AllAdvantage.com generated more revenue in its first 12 months of operations than any online consumer/advertising company in history. The growth in members far outstripped the growth in revenues back in 1998. When the Internet boom crashed in 2000-01, the revenues from the business could not keep up with the rapid growth in members; AllAdvantage then had to shut down. By then, AA had paid over $100 million in cheques to members.

Vision

YouTube was acquired for $1.65 billion by Google in October 2006. The story of how three guys made hundreds of millions of dollars in one year is a great tale of entrepreneurial success.

What happened to the first users who posted their videos on the site and told their friends to do the same? We don’t hear about them, because they did not get anything (other than free video hosting). Wasn’t it really these users that helped turn YouTube into a multi-billion dollar company? Sure the site is great and the founders deserve all the credit they get, but it is the users who ultimately made it valuable.

There are plenty of video sites, and if it wasn’t YouTube, another site could have filled the space, become a household name and been acquired for an amazing price. We are not trying to pick on YouTube (which we happen to love using).

How about the early users of Skype? What about those who first downloaded the software, made calls to their friends in different countries and told their parents to use it as well? And MySpace? How about the millions of members there? How did they do when News Corp. bought the company for almost $600 million? After all, it was the members that Rupert Murdoch was after when he purchased the site.

Referral Structure

Members earn a monthly share of the AGLOCO revenue based on the use of the AGLOCO Viewbar™ that month.

Members earn part of the company based on the use of the AGLOCO Viewbar™ that month (currently a maximum of five hours are rewarded).

Members who use our referral system to help build the AGLOCO network will earn more. (AGLOCO only has significant value as a large network and people who help build it should be rewarded. – We also feel that the early users who told friends about YouTube or MySpace or even Google probably deserved something too, but no referral system was available to record their work).

Members will also get a share of any commissions AGLOCO gets when a Member purchases a product or service from an AGLOCO Sponsor company.

Will It Work?

This is actually not a new idea. It worked last time around, when a company called AllAdvantage used the same system and paid out over $120 million dollars to its members between 1999 and 2001. You can still find sites online by people who made good money with the company. The only reason AllAdvantage didn’t continue was because of the failure of the dot-com market, and with it Internet advertising. Today the Internet is much more stable and advertising spending is at record levels, with calls on all sides for more relevant, less annoying advertising. AGLOCO’s small but useful Viewbar will satisfy that need.

Getting Started

All you need to do is register for a free account in order to get the viewbar. However, you can just visit the Agloco.com website if you want to get more info about this website and business model. Time will tell if this ends up being more successful than its predecessor, AllAdvantage.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to watch the live broadcast announcing the Oakland Athletics move to Cisco Field in Fremont, California. Rather than rehashing old news, I’d like to focus on John Chambers. Let’s stir the pot a bit.

Should we consider including him in the PopDigerati Hall of Fame? No one would dispute Chambers as being a deft politician and a savvy businessman. However, let’s see what Chambers is doing to change the world through Cisco:

Expanding the Cisco Networking Academy program in the Middle East region to bridge IT skill gaps and shortage of networking professionals

Cisco claims it is empowering the human network with “solutions that connect, secure and empower people”.

New forms of communication such as Voice over IP (part of their Unified Communications Solution) and TelePresence (really cool stuff)

Read more about John’s vision here.

On the other hand, some may argue that Cisco is a more established company that is not really leading the way with the latest Web 2.0 technologies on its own corporate website or keeping up with cutting edge e-commerce capabilities.

So what’s your opinion PopDigerati fans?
